Description
This battle takes
place as Gandalf is in between his captivity at Orthanc and the forming
of the fellowship at Rivendell. He lost his staff of power at Orthanc
and so made a small detour into the edges of Lothlórien to retrieve
his replacement staff from a gnarled old oak on the borders of that
land. He is attacked by Uruk-Hai before he can get to his staff.
Participants
Gandalf, Woodelf Captain with bow and 4 Woodelves with bow.
1 Uruk-Hai Captain with sword/shield, 1 Uruk-Hai Captain with bow,
12 Uruk-Hai with sword/shield and 6 Uruk-Hai with bow.
Layout
This scenario is set on a 48” by 48” board. In the top corner
of the board is a small hill with a tree placed on top. The top 20”
of the board should be heavily forested and cause movement penalties
for Gandalf and the Uruk-Hai. A fast moving river crosses the board
12” from the bottom. The river should have a ford in the middle of
it (counts as difficult terrain) and 2 places either side of it where
the river is narrow enough to jump across. The rest of the river is
impassable. There should be various items of cover (such as trees,
standing stones, short
walls, etc) on either side of the river. There should be 3 areas
just within the tree line as seen on the map. These 3 areas should
be numbered from 1 to 3.
Starting Positions
Gandalf should start in the middle of the bottom edge of the board.
The Woodelves do not set up at the start of the game. The Uruk-Hai
should all be set up within 6” of the bottom corner of the board furthest
away from the hill.
Objectives
The only objective for the Good side is for Gandalf to reach the
tree on the hilltop to recover his staff and then leave the board
anywhere on the bottom edge. He must recover his staff before he can
leave the battle.
The only objective of the Evil side is to kill Gandalf. There can
be no draw in this scenario.

Special
Rules
Gandalf starts the game without his staff of power. Therefore
he can not use any of the benefits of the staff of power – cast light
spell, free point of will each turn and two handed attacks.
The Woodelves are hidden at the start of the game, protecting Gandalf’s
staff according to the orders of Galadriel. Before the game begins,
the player controlling the forces of Good should write on a piece
of paper a number from 1 to 3 denoting where his Woodelves are hiding.
This is kept hidden from the player controlling the forces of Evil
until the time comes to reveal the Woodelf guardians.
As soon as any model from either side crosses a line 12” from the
stream, the Woodelves are revealed. Once a model has crossed this
line and finished its move, the Good player shows the number that
is written on the piece of paper and places the Woodelf Captain next
to the appropriate place. The remaining Woodelves are placed anywhere
within 4” of their Captain staying behind the tree line. The Woodelves
can not move in the turn they appear and can not be placed in touch
with an enemy – they are allowed to take their turn to shoot and they
can fight in combat if they are charged after they appear.
