This article is about making roads, pathways and tracks. I wanted to have sections of roads that fit together almost like train track sections rather than one whole road piece.
This article makes use of Quick Drying Polyfiller as seen in the picture below.
You will also need some plastic table mats. I got these from a shop called Wilkos (formally known as Wilkinsons).
Cut a rectangular shape out from the place mat. The one shown in this guide is about 3 inches wide and 12 inches long.
.
Using an off cut of table mat you need to make a 'scraping tool'. This is a rectangle shape about 1 inch wide and 2 inches long.
.
Apply the Polyfiller over the rectangle.
Use the scraping tool to smooth over the whole surface so that it is all covered.
Using the long edge of the scraping tool, apply up and down movements along the surface of the rectangle. These need to be all going along the long side.
.
Now using a corner of the scraping tool, drag lines alone the rectangle going alone the long side. You can occasionally make some of these line curved. These are cart wheel tracks, so use your imagination when thinking about where these lines would be. Think about the spacing between the wheels on a cart, did a cart have to swerve once? etc.
Here is a picture taken with different lighting, so the shadows show up all the lumps and bumps and lines.
Spray the whole piece Black. Once dry heavily drybrush Codex Grey all over, followed by a drybrush of Fortress Grey and finally a light drybrush of Skull White. (Not that the picture below has had its edges flocked. This doesn't happen until step 8 below)
Once dry, apply a wash of watered down Brown ink over the whole piece. Once this has dryed, drybrush Fortress Grey over again.
Apply PVA glue down both edges and sprinkle on Static Grass. Shake off excess.
You can make various different sections of roads, such as bends, t-junctions, crossroads and thinner pieces to act as pathways.
